The Resorter

THE RESORT FLOWER LADY

by Rhonda Ciacco

Audrey Burcham was well known for many years as “The Flower Lady” for The Resort. She took great pride in her flowers and they always bloomed and looked glorious just for her.

When I started working for The Resort, thirteen years ago, I met Audrey and we worked together on her flowers. I learned a lot from our Flower Lady and every time I plant a flower she will always be right there with me, giving her advice.

Stained Glass

When her health prevented her from planting our flowers, she would still come by on her scooter and look them over and I would always wait to see that smile of approval that the flowers had been planted correctly and that all was well. Audrey continued for several years to plant the flowers in the Tennis Club flowerpots and Bob would help her getting the flowers to the pots.

Through the years that Audrey and Bob lived at The Resort they both volunteered for many functions.
Every fall that The Resort Flowers are planted Audrey’s memory will be with all of us who knew her. She will be smiling down from Heaven with her smile of approval.

“THEN YOU CAN DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING”

Glass Art at The Resort

By

Dale Dauten, Syndicated Columnist

“For me, a stained glass window is a transparent partition between my heart and the heart of the world.” Marc Chagall

Stained Glass

Arnold Castor remembers with a smile the day he walked into the Activities Office to suggest that he might volunteer to start a group doing stained glass: “The Activities Director we had back then jumped up and said, ‘Let’s find a place.’” He adds, “Then she put Stained Glass on the schedule of groups and a half a dozen people showed up. Then, suddenly it was a dozen and it kept growing.”

Now it’s over thirty residents who meet in the Lapidary room to help and support each other in their glass work. No longer is it just stained glass, but thanks to the addition of a kiln, they can do fusing, and thus can do glass art, including beads and jewelry. And while Arnold is still an avid participant, he’s turned over the organizational tasks to Anita Serrano, who’s now the contact person.

If you’ve ever been curious about working with glass, you can visit the group and if you become a member (just $20 a year), they’ll provide you everything you need to do your first two projects. (That includes the glass and tools, as well as instruction.)

The starter project is usually a simple sun-catcher butterfly, with a pattern like this one:

Stained Glass

The day I visited Arnold and Anita, I also got to meet Arnold’s wife, Bobi, and one of the members, Carrie Loosz. This is Carrie’s third season doing glass and she has progressed to a much more involved butterfly:

Her plan is to put the butterfly onto a stepping-stone, which will then be a garden feature. She says of the work, “Once you learn how to cut glass and do foil, you can do just about anything.” (The foil she’s referring to is copper foil used to line the pieces and help them hold together when the lead is added. You can see the copper in the first photo above.)

Arnold is familiar with doing “just about anything.” Bonnie asked him to recall one particularly large piece. “It was about six feet in diameter,” he recalled. “I had a place to hang it, but I knew I couldn’t get it in the car to take it home. So I made it in three pieces, then assembled it at home.”

I asked Anita to explain how the typical projects come together. She explained that some people use patterns and some draw their own. Then they choose the colors and get the glass from Hobby Lobby or one of two specialty shops. “A lot of the fun of it,” she said, “is from discussing patterns and colors to use, and we help each other. It’s a social event, a good time.”

And out of those good times come not only hanging pieces, but garden stake butterflies, stepping stones, jewelry and jewelry boxes, and night lights.

As you walk or drive around the park, look for the stained glass. Here are a few you can spot outside Anita’s place.

And if you want to try it out, the group meets in Lapidary on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and all day on Fridays.
